How can I sew velcro on the back of a Persian rug?

It is like a Persian carpet (much less expensive – a rustic blanket for our Lodge-style house that is perfect as a wallhanging, but we want to hang like a tapestry rug using velcro against a Velcro board with staples (as they do in museums). The problem is that the tissue is so impenetrable that I'm practically breaking needles, frayed thread, creating calluses, dying a slow death :-) This brings me beside forever. There must be a better way to do it by hand. Or, I'm just using the wrong team? I'm using curved upholstery needles, thimbles, thread tapestry (the thread often frays or leaves your knot!), Pliers (for intense push the needle through the shield as carpet backing. Please help! just need to sew a strip of two inches, which is about 6 feet long, but I spent half a day sewing about 3 inches!

Instead of sewing on the velcro, the use a stapler, with the flat side of the staple in the back of the carpet. The dog-eared will be hidden in the nap of the cloth in the front. If you have to sew, use tapestry needle too thick, or one of counted cross stitch. The needle is very heavy and has a wider eye. Use a small piece of plastic rubber to hold the needle, as it passes through the Velcro and carpet. Floss quilting or buttonhole twist, doubled and run through a piece of candle or beeswax.
