Making Tibetan rugs is an ancient art and tradition of nomadic peoples, rugs originally made for personal use – from floor coverings to horse saddles. Tibetan carpets were more influenced by tribal culture, Persian or Turkish design. What is unique about Tibetan rugs is that virtually everything is handmade. The Tibetans use the wool of sheep of the tribes or other animals, creating long, high filament yarn quality diamonds. The rugs are woven by wrapping a continuous length of wire onto a bar provided through the cables laid in the loom. When the bar has wrapped its entire length, a knife slides along the rod, cutting the wrapped yarn into two rows of tufts. Additional distinctive features of the carpets Tibetan are its vivid colors, huge grounds and very few and relatively simple and dominant backgrounds. The background colors are mainly blue, black, red and orange. The reasons are woven in red, orange, pink, yellow, beige, blue, green and white.
In the 1950s, when the Chinese Communists occupied Tibet, Tibetan refugees fled to India and Nepal, and brought their unique rug-making experience with them. Today, the rug business is one of the largest industries in Nepal.
Types and styles of Tibetan rugs are classified by their design, such as medals, rosettes and flowers, mythological animal motifs, and geometric. Medallion designs are characterized by one or three central medallions with multiple borders. The medallions are typically square surrounded by flowers, round flowers inside. Flowers can be lotus or peony. Rosetta floral design styles or have two or three large flowers in the center with borders or flowers scattered all over the carpet without borders. The animal mythological bird designs are the dragon, the phoenix, the white crane Manchuria, the bat and the bee. Sometimes they come in a medallion design or are in an all-over design. Usually no more than four of the shapes on a rug. The geometric designs that are less frequently seen, comes in panels, especially design with flat flowers look into squares or diamond cells.
